Gearbox Cooling Fans

Direct drive axial and mixed flow fans engineered for engine and gearbox oil cooling, proven across civil and military helicopter main and intermediate gearbox systems. Their high static pressure rise and stall resistance keep performance stable as heat exchangers gradually block over time. A splined shear-neck drive protects the gearbox from damage if a fan should jam.

Product Details

AMETEK Airtechnology designs and manufactures a range of direct drive axial and mixed flow fans for engine and gearbox oil cooling. Each fan unit generally comprises an inlet, impeller, and a static guide vane duct or outlet scroll recent designs feature carbon fibre outlet scrolls with integral Kevlar for blade-off containment and reduced weight, and we've also supplied carbon fibre ducting both upstream and downstream of the fan to complete an installation.

Our mixed flow fan designs are particularly well suited here: their high static pressure rise and inherent resistance to stall keep performance stable even as a heat exchanger gradually blocks and system resistance changes over time.

We're particularly experienced in helicopter gearbox oil cooling numerous high-performance mixed flow designs are in service across civil and military main and intermediate gearbox cooling systems. Our engineers support the specification from earliest concept through full qualification, with ILS and customer support for repair and overhaul completing the package.

Fans are typically driven directly by the gearbox or by a hydraulic motor. A splined shear-neck drive connects the drive to the fan and is designed to fail at a set torque, protecting the gearbox from damage if a fan should jam.

Our mixed flow designs also feature on many armoured vehicles for engine and ancillary cooling their radial flow exit suits cramped engine bay applications, and the fans can sit close to the vehicle's hull while maintaining peak performance.

Across this range, we can modify inlet and outlet geometry for integration with your sub-systems, advise on mounting and noise reduction, and add features such as guards, non-return valves, and under-speed or over-temperature warnings.
