Q: What voltage and power options are available?

Our standard range covers 115V and 200V AC (single and three-phase, 400Hz) and 28V DC, and we're developing a 270V DC controller to support modern “More Electric” aircraft architectures.

Q: Do you offer custom aerospace heaters?

Yes. Every heater is designed to the customer's specification we work closely with you to define interfaces, controls, and safety devices rather than offering a fixed catalogue unit.

Q: What certifications do AMETEK Airtechnology's heaters meet?

Our heaters are qualified to RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-810, including gunfire testing, and we're experienced with MIL-STD-461 EMC compliance.

Q: What heat-source technologies are used inside your heaters?

We build around three core technologies: heater rods (a cartridge heater inserted into an aluminium heat-sink), silicone mat (resistance wire between layers of silicone rubber on nested aluminium tubes), and polyimide etched foil each selected for the application's pressure-drop, footprint, and surface-temperature needs.

Q: Can your heaters operate stand-alone, outside the aircraft's ECS?

Yes. Combined with our own axial or mixed-flow fans, our fan heaters provide stand-alone heating for windscreen defog, cabin heating, pilot foot-warming, and remote bay heating independent of the ECS.

Q: Do helicopters use these heaters?

Yes. We've supplied heaters and fan heaters for helicopter applications including pilot foot-warming and cockpit glazing demist and defog.

Q: How do I choose the right heater for my aircraft or defence vehicle?

Overview

AMETEK Airtechnology has an extensive portfolio of heater and fan heater designs for the aerospace industry, covering fixed and rotary-wing aircraft across commercial and military roles. Our duct-type heaters range from 150W to 6kW and typically provide supplementary heating as part of an aircraft's Environmental Control System (ECS).

We also pair our heaters with our own axial and mixed-flow fans to deliver stand-alone heating outside the ECS for windscreen defog, cabin heating, pilot foot-warming, and remote bay heating such as externally mounted electronics pods. Because the application drives the design, every heater is tailored to the customer's specific interface, control, and safety requirements rather than pulled from a fixed catalogue.

Our heaters are qualified to RTCA DO-160 and MIL-STD-810 (including gunfire testing), and we're experienced with MIL-STD-461 EMC compliance. We're also developing a 270VDC controller for our brushless motor, fan, and heater products and the heating technology in our existing 28VDC series adapts readily to 270VDC, keeping pace with the electrical architectures of modern aircraft.

Heat Source Technologies

Every heater can be specified around one of three core heat-source technologies:

Heater Rods - a cartridge-type heater rod inserted into an aluminium heat-sink
Silicone Mat - an etched foil heater track sandwiched between layers of glass-reinforced silicone rubber, bonded onto nested aluminium tubes for a large heat-transfer area, low pressure drop, and minimised surface temperature

For fan heaters, we select fans from our own range most often our Mixed Flow Fans, chosen for their low noise signature and non-stall characteristics configurable for 28VDC brushless or single/three-phase 400Hz supply.
